Metacognition

We are using metacognition as we read! We are thinking about our thinking!

We made a "real reading" salad to demonstrate that text plus thinking equals real reading. Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Chorvat & Miss Woods modeled reading and thinking while the students added  tomato (red cards symbolizing the text) and lettuce (green cards symbolizing thinking). When we were finished the class realized our salad was made with mostly lettuce...I mean thinking.

Together we have discovered the importance of checking for understanding as we read. To be metacognitive means to truly understand and learn from text. We have thrown "fake" reading out the window and are on our way to becoming "real" readers!
